Pre-Shabbos Kosher Food Blogging
November 7, 2008
Probably because nothing else of any note happened in the last seven days, the Forward has put out a series of articles on the ongoing Rubashkin/Agriprocessors scandal and the ensuing kosher meat crisis. Suffice it to say, it’s looking more and more like Agriprocessors (it’s like they were flipping through Wendell Berry and totally missing the point when they chose the name) is in it pretty deep, if not done. But in Minnesota, North Star Beef’s plant has been shut down due to a fire. Three of the five largest kosher slaughterhouses are closed for the foreseeable future.
That this is happening at the same time Prop. 2 has passed in California makes it an opportunity for the Jewish community. If the kosher meat industry decides to rebuild as an example of what an economical, earth- and ethics-friendly food industry (I hate that word in this context, but it’s the best I can do) might look like — Well, that would be the Jewish thing to do.
(And if you need any example what agribusiness can do to your average citizen and community, just take a look at the distress Agriproccessors’ (inevitable?) collapse has brought to Postville, Iowa.)
